Why Vista Verde

Southlake's Premier Custom Turf Installer

Vista Verde Turf Co. was created to bring a higher standard to custom turf and putting greens across Southlake, Westlake, Colleyville, and the surrounding DFW communities. Built on 25+ years of experience designing and building high-end outdoor spaces, Vista Verde brings a more thoughtful approach to turf, with quality materials, custom design, and professional craftsmanship at every step.

Vista Verde’s higher standard comes from experience. We’ve installed integrated turf and putting greens around dozens of pools and outdoor living spaces across the Metroplex, and along the way, we learned that turf succeeds for many of the same reasons a pool does: a properly prepared base, thoughtful drainage, and a design that accounts for how North Texas soil moves through a wet spring and a hundred-degree August. We already build with those conditions in mind every week.

Just as importantly, turf shouldn’t feel like an afterthought added to a finished outdoor living space. When the turf and hardscape are designed together, the grades, drainage, and transitions work together from the start. The result is a space that feels intentional from every angle.

How Our Turf Installation Process Works

Turf Installation in DFW

Luxury turf in an outdoor living area that still looks right in year eight is almost entirely a function of what happens before the turf comes off the roll. Nobody sees the base, the drainage, or the seams once the project is finished, which is exactly why those are the steps that separate an installation that holds from one that doesn’t.

That’s why we take every step of the process seriously, and why we’ll walk you through all of it before anything comes out of the ground.

1

Turf Design and Selection

Face weight, pile height, blade shape, and backing all change how a surface looks and how long it lasts. We spec by application: a low-traffic front yard, a dog run, and a putting green are three different products. A company that installs the same turf on all three is buying whatever its supplier is discounting, not specifying for your property.

2

Excavation and Base Preparation

We remove existing sod, soil, or old turf to a depth of 3 to 4 inches and haul it off. DFW's expansive clay is the variable that decides whether a surface stays flat or ripples. It swells when it takes on water and shrinks when it dries, and a base that doesn't account for that movement shows up as ripples, low spots, and separated seams within a few seasons. We build a compacted aggregate base engineered for that soil, not a generic spec pulled from a national installation manual.

3

Drainage

Drainage is where most installations quietly fail. Water has to have somewhere to go, and on a property with hardscape, a pool, or established irrigation, that route has to be designed rather than assumed. We grade the base to move water toward a designed outlet instead of leaving it to percolate, and we tie into the existing drainage on the property rather than working around it. On pet installations and pool surrounds the drainage layer changes; those sections cover the differences.

4

Seaming, Anchoring, and Infill

Seams will betray a bad install every time. Ours are cut to the blade direction, glued and anchored, and placed where sightlines don't run through them. Perimeters are anchored to hold through freeze-thaw, and infill is brushed in to weight the turf, hold blades upright, and, depending on the application, manage heat or odor.

5

Process Completed

Custom Backyard Putting Green Installation

We build greens to a target roll speed, with real contour and slope rather than a flat rectangle, cut cups and fringe collars, and a fringe-to-green transition that plays cleanly. Most run between 100 and 1,500 sq ft and fit into an existing backyard, often alongside a pool or across the yard from one.

Putting greens start at $4,500 and most land between $10,000 and $30,000. They cost more than a lawn of the same size for three specific reasons: the base has to be built up and graded to hold contours, they take roughly four times as much infill, and that infill is color matched. See the cost section for how the categories compare.

If you’ve been looking at putting greens online, most of what you’ve found is a kit or a mat. Those are products. This is construction: grading, drainage, and a surface built for the yard it’s going into.

Artificial Turf around Pools & Pool Decks

Is Turf Around A Pool A Good Idea?

Yes, provided the drainage is designed for it and the turf is specified for a pool environment. Splash-out and backwash have to move somewhere, chemically-treated water contacts the fibers daily, and the surface is walked on barefoot in August. All three are solvable, and all three are ignored by installers who treat a pool deck like a lawn.

Turf vs. Concrete Around a Pool

Concrete is durable and inexpensive to install, but it stores heat, cracks as North Texas’s expansive clay soil shifts, and reflects glare. Turf runs cooler than concrete underfoot depending on infill and shade, doesn’t crack, softens the surface for kids, and eliminates the mowing strip nobody can mow. The trade-offs of turf vs concrete: turf costs more up front, and the fibers do hold heat in direct sun. That’s why we spec heat-managed fiber and cooling infill for pool surrounds, and why we’ll tell you where a hybrid of both surfaces is the better answer.

How we build it

We cut to the coping line, over-anchor the perimeter where foot traffic and wet feet concentrate, tie drainage into the pool deck’s existing system, and use chlorine-stable fibers.

Pool surrounds are priced the same as a standard turf lawn. The pool environment changes the specification, not the cost.

Pet Turf Installation for DFW Backyards & Dog Runs

Pet turf is a permanent installation, not a mat. The difference is under the surface: a deeper, faster-draining base and a drainage layer designed so urine passes straight through instead of sitting in the infill, plus antimicrobial fiber and an infill that manages odor rather than holding it.

Done properly, an artificial turf dog yard drains and rinses clean, holds up to running and digging, and looks like the rest of the landscape, with no worn track along the fence line and no mud at the back door.

We install full backyards for dogs as well as dedicated dog runs, and we’ll help you decide which one your yard and your dog actually need.

Pet turf cost in DFW does run slightly higher than a standard turf lawn of the same size, but the difference is in the critical antimicrobial fiber and infill.

How Much Does Artificial Turf Cost in DFW?

Most artificial turf projects in DFW fall between $5,000 and $22,000 installed, depending on size. A typical suburban backyard of about 1,000 square feet runs $9,500 to $11,000, and a larger 2,000 square foot yard runs $19,000 to $22,000. Our minimum project is $3,500. Besides size, there are many factors that go into costing a project. These estimates are to give you an idea of where project costs can start, based on the size of your turf area.

What a Project May Cost by Size

300 sq ft
side yard green turf next to pool

Typical Install Cost: $3,500 minimum

For a project size up to 300 sq ft, we typically install side yards, courtyards, or a small dog run.

small courtyard with turf

Typical Install Cost: $5,000 to $6,000 minimum

For a project size up to 500 sq ft, we typically install full small backyards and poolside strips. At this size lot we can also build a putting green.

Typical Install Cost: $11,000 to $13,000

For a project size up to 1,000 sq ft, we typically install a full typical suburban backyard or a professionally designed putting green.

Typical Install Cost: $20,000 to $24,000

For a project size up to 2,000 sq ft, we typically install a full backyard on a larger lot and a custom putting green.

modern pool and putting green

Typical Install Cost: $28,500+

For a project size up to 500 sq ft, we typically install large estate lots and fully custom putting green.

Our minimum project is $3,500 for standard turf and $4,000 for a putting green. Below roughly 300 square feet, the fixed costs of mobilizing a crew, moving equipment, and hauling off the old surface are the same as they are on a large job. We would rather tell you that now than after the estimate.

What a Project May Cost by Type

turf around big pool

Lawns and Pool Surrounds

Typical total installed: $4,750 to $50,000

Typical Project Size: 500 to 5,000 sq ft

Standard turf covers lawns and pool surrounds, which are built the same way and priced the same way.

side yard turf behind pool

Backyards and Dog Runs

Typical total installed: $5,125 to $53,750

Typical Project Size: 500 to 5,000 sq ft

Pet turf adds antimicrobial fiber and infill, which is why it runs slightly higher.

Putting Greens

Typical total installed: $4,000 to $37,500

Typical Project Size: 100 to 1,500 sq ft

Putting greens are their own category: extra base preparation for contouring, roughly four times as much infill, color-matched infill, and considerably more labor.

* Every property is different. We price the project, not the square footage.

What Changes the Price?

Excavation

Everything currently on the turf site has to come out and go somewhere. Removing established sod is straightforward. Breaking out an old concrete pad, pulling failed turf from a previous installer, or hauling off heavy clay soil is not, and disposal is priced by volume.

Drainage Preparation

North Texas clay does not drain, so drainage is built rather than assumed. A flat site that already drains toward a working outlet needs little. A site that holds water, sits below a neighbor, or has to tie into an existing pool deck system needs a designed solution, and that equates to additional work before any turf arrives.

Sprinkler preparation

Capping, rerouting, or removing existing irrigation under the install area.

Weed barriers

What goes between base and turf depends on what is growing there now. Bermuda and nutsedge push through anything casual and need a heavier barrier and more thorough preparation underneath

Turf product selection

Face weight, pile height, blade shape, backing, and warranty tier will all play a factor in the overall cost of the project.

Infill

Standard silica is the baseline. Antimicrobial infill for pet installations, cooling infill for full-sun and pool areas, and color-matched infill for putting greens all cost more, and putting greens use roughly four times as much of it.

Site access and grade

A backyard reachable by equipment through a wide gate is a different job than one where every yard of base goes in by wheelbarrow. Slope matters too, because dirt has to move before anything gets built.

FAQ

Common Questions About Artificial Turf in DFW

Find answers to common questions about our services in our FAQ section. From project timelines to costs, we cover everything you need to know about our garden landscaping process.

Artificial turf installation in DFW typically costs between $5,000 and $22,000 for most residential projects. For example, a 1,000 square foot backyard runs $11,000 to $13,000 installed. Final pricing depends on excavation, drainage work, irrigation rework, and the turf product you choose. Our minimum project is $3,500.

A 1,000 square foot artificial turf installation in DFW typically runs $11,000 to $13,000 installed. That covers excavation and haul-off, a compacted base built for North Texas clay, drainage, the turf itself, and infill. Sites needing heavy excavation or irrigation rework land at the higher end of that range.

A 2,000 square foot artificial turf installation in DFW typically runs $20,000 to $24,000 installed. That is a full backyard on a larger suburban lot. Cost scales closely with area at this size, because base preparation, drainage, and infill all scale with the ground being covered.

The two real downsides are heat, and upfront cost. Turf can get hotter than natural grass in direct sun, and it costs more to install than sod. However, cooling infill and shade placement address the heat. Cost is a trade-off worth weighing before you buy. If your goal is a beautiful, year-round putting green or backyard oasis with little upkeep and a decrease in your summer water bill, artificial turf is a worthwhile investment.

For most pool surrounds, yes. Turf doesn’t crack as the north Texas clay soil moves, it softens the surface underfoot, and it removes the mowing strip along the coping. But turf holds more heat than concrete in direct sun, so we spec cooling infill and in some cases recommend combining both surfaces.

Backyard putting greens start at $4,500, and most projects land between $10,000 and $30,000 depending on size and how much contouring the design calls for. Greens cost more than a lawn of the same size because the base is built up and graded to hold contours, and they take roughly four times as much infill.

Pet turf uses antimicrobial fiber and a specialty infill that manages odor rather than holding it, over a deeper and faster draining base so urine passes straight through. Standard landscape turf is not built to drain that way. The difference is in the fiber, the infill, and the drainage layer underneath.

A properly installed artificial turf lawn lasts fifteen to twenty years in North Texas, and our turf carries a 16 year manufacturer warranty. Lifespan depends far more on the base beneath the turf than on the turf itself. A base that fails will ripple and separate seams long before the fibers wear out.
